Tracking my Debt

May 9th, 2007 at 07:57 pm

I saw some posts here about debt and their progress in paying off their debt. So I thought of doing the same. I would like to get out of debt ASAP or, more realistically, in a few years... so that is my main goal now. I have also decided to use some software to help me track my expenses. I found many in the internet, but not quite sure which one to use. Any suggestions?

Here is quick snapshot of my remaining debt:
Car - $6,300
Various Credit Cards - $8,000 approx.
Student Loan - $5,000 approx

    Welcome to the blogs!

You can use anything from a piece of paper to a computer program to track your spending. I don't think you have to buy anything fancy, though it might be fun to do it that way.

    Welcome.

I love Quicken myself, but there are cheaper options too...

I actually use it a lot in conjuction with excel anyway.

Hello! I usually just use an excel page to track my spending and for my budget. I made a template that I can reuse month after month.

I use spreadsheet from docs.google.com so that I can track my financial situation from anywhere. I export it from time to time to have a fresh copy on my local machine.

Welcome! I, also, use excel spreadsheets with the help of Hubby to learn to set them up.

I am using a combination of both excel spreadsheets and Quicken. Some say that this may be overkill but I don't believe in having too much information at hand.

Best way to start is to track you spending for the next month. Keep all your reciepts and bills (pay them) and see where your money is going.

Most people when they start are amazed at how the small amounts they spend here and there add up! Its quite often the small things that getcha...not the big things. A daily (or more) coffee habit can add up to real money...

I use excel with Quicken too, maybe download a trial of Qucken and see if you like it....

Another pen & paper person here. I'm way too cheap to buy something I can do on my own.

Thanks for all the replies! I have tried spreadsheets in the past. It does not work out for me. The setting up part is tough. I have also looked at quicken, money and 1 or 2 more. I find them very complicated... I feel like I have to be an accountant to use these the right way. I have been using a web based budgeting service for a few weeks now. It seems to work out for me now. It is also cheap... ummm... free!! :-)
